Nowadays, it is difficult to find a unique getaway that has not been saturated with tourist traps, traffic, or crowds. In post-pandemic times, with revenge travel on the rise, there are few places that aren’t struggling with an influx of travelers. But, despite these challenges, Todos Santos is still a safe-haven for wanderlust, one that has preserved the magic of Mexico. This town has maintained its calm and siesta-like essence since its first settlers came in the mid 1700s. For a Todos Santos hotel, look no further than Villa Santa Cruz, for amazing things to do on your Todos Santos vacation.
1) Surfing and Hiking in Baja Sur
A local surfing hub, people travel from all over the world to experience the Todos Santos waves. Playa Los Cerritos, Playa San Pedrito and La Pastora are considered the best places to surf in Todos Santos. These beaches attract a wonderful community for the laid back sport. The best time to surf in Todos Santos is at the end of summer and in the wintertime. Though beaches are difficult to access without a vehicle, they are definitely worth the trip. Local fishermen line up at Punta Lobos, a well known beach, perfect for a long stroll and watching the fisherman come in with the day’s catch. This gorgeous beach trails up and over the hills to the “Puerto Viejo” or Old Port, a protected cove – you can spot it from a scenic hike up to the peak. This is an unmatched and otherwise deserted beach – it cannot be topped!
2) More Amazing Things to do in Todos Santos
If you don’t want to hike to see the Old Port, you can go on a horseback riding adventure instead. Riding horses in Mexico is a beautiful experience. With the Sierra Laguna Mountains as your backdrop and the ocean as your soundtrack, this will make for an unforgettable excursion. You can end your day by releasing baby sea turtles into the ocean with the conservation group, Tortugueros Las Playitas. There are releases almost every day between December and April, right at sunset. Spend your evening at the beach and assist in this ecological, environmental and educational opportunity. Top this incredible day by sinking your feet into the sand and sipping on a cocktail at The Green Room, our onsite beachfront restaurant. We prepare an array of fresh, local dishes and serve ice cold cocktails and our own branded mezcal from Oaxaca. Can’t beat the sunset views!
3) History of Todos Santos
Jesuit missionaries established themselves here, in this oasis valley, primarily due to the abundant and reliable water supply. Settlers took advantage of the fertile soil and began to plant crops. The area eventually became a major producer of sugar cane. Named after “all saints,” our town was the sugar capital of Baja through the mid 1900s. Backed by the sugar mills’ financial boost, Todos Santos opened two theaters and attracted artists, sculptors, and others involved with the arts. Todos Santos’ cultural center can be found in a former schoolhouse, home to nationalist and revolutionary murals dating from 1933. Beautiful colonial buildings still line the streets and the thriving agricultural economy makes for a hardworking, yet simple life.
